Eric Stein has been Senior Advisor in the Office of Housing, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, since 2022, where he focuses on Federal Housing Administration single-family servicing issues. Previously, he was SVP at Self-Help, a community development financial institution where he worked for 20 years, and its policy affiliate, Center for Responsible Lending. He was also Special Advisor to Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Mel Watt from 2014-19; FHFA is conservator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In addition, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Consumer Protection at the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 2009-10, where he was responsible for developing, and then working with Congress to enact, legislation creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and reforming the mortgage market. Eric has a B.A. from Williams College and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
